What We Do
Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
Objective: Improve access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
Large sections of the vulnerable population in the Horn of Africa do not have access to sustainable sources of water for both livestock and human consumption while an estimated half of the population lack access to adequate sanitary facility. The main causes of this situation are linked to poor planning for development of water sources, inadequate capacity to establish sanitation facilities, low latrine coverage in the rural areas and the collapse of the water infrastructure among others. Lack of sanitation facilities is contributing to the poor hygiene situation in the region.
To address the challenges enumerated above OSDA has focused its effort on the facilitation of access to safe drinking water to households and their livestock by promoting rainwater harvesting technologies to adapt to climate change through the establishment of underground water harvesting tanks, drilling of boreholes, as well as rehabilitation and improvement of water pans and shallow wells.
