OSDA Completes 1KM Pipeline Extension to Boost Agriculture in Mandera East

As part of the EU-funded DARIS WACAN Project, OSDA has successfully completed a critical 1-kilometer water pipeline extension from the Bulla Haji shallow well directly to a community-owned farm in Mandera East. This major milestone, achieved across one of the project’s nine strategic sites, marks a transformative step toward enhancing food security and promoting sustainable agriculture in the region.

The newly connected farm—now receiving a steady flow of water—serves as a central hub for livelihood activities, directly supporting 252 households. Community members, organized into dynamic farmer groups led by youth and women, have already begun transplanting seedlings, signaling the start of a vibrant agricultural season.

Guided by crop protection officers from the Mandera County Ministry of Agriculture, the farmers have successfully planted kales, spinach, tomatoes, and Dania, creating a diverse and resilient food production system. Prior to this intervention, the farm struggled with inadequate access to water, hindering productivity and food availability.

With furrows carefully prepared to ensure equitable water distribution and optimal soil retention, the community is now on track for a promising harvest within the next three months. This development is not just about infrastructure—it’s about empowering local communities, especially women and youth, to lead the way in transforming the agricultural landscape of Mandera County.

OSDA remains committed to driving community-led solutions that address critical development needs and build a resilient future.
