30 Years After Beijing: The Fight for Gender Equality Continues

Thirty years ago, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action set forth an ambitious global agenda for gender equality. It was a defining moment when 189 governments committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring equal rights for women and girls. Fast forward to 2025, and the world stands at a crossroads—while progress has been made, gender discrimination remains deeply entrenched in societies, limiting opportunities and stalling justice.

Progress Made, But Not for All

🔹 Legal Reforms: Since 1995, 1,531 legal reforms have sought to advance gender equality worldwide. More countries now have laws against gender-based discrimination in employment and policies ensuring women’s participation in decision-making.
🔹 Representation: The proportion of women in parliaments has doubled since 1995, but men still hold three-quarters of parliamentary seats globally.
🔹 Education Gains: More girls are completing school, yet millions of adolescent girls—especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia—are still being left behind.

Challenges That Remain

Despite the gains, systemic inequalities persist, exacerbated by economic instability, climate change, and political backlash against gender rights.

🚨 Gender-based Violence: Nearly one in three women experiences physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Despite 90% of countries implementing laws to address violence against women, enforcement remains weak.
🚨 Poverty & Unpaid Care Work: Women still earn 20% less than men and do three times more unpaid care work, limiting their access to financial independence.
🚨 Conflict & Displacement: Over 612 million women and girls now live near conflict zones, facing increased risks of violence, forced migration, and exploitation.

The Call to Action: What Needs to Happen Next

The Beijing+30 Action Agenda outlines six priority areas for accelerating gender equality:

1️⃣ Close the Accountability Gap – Stronger institutions and data tracking for gender-responsive policies.
2️⃣ Invest in Women’s Economic Power – Fair wages, social protection, and opportunities in new industries like the green economy.
3️⃣ End Gender-Based Violence – Increased funding for survivor support and stricter law enforcement.
4️⃣ Women’s Leadership in Decision-Making – Gender quotas and policies to ensure full participation.
5️⃣ Climate Justice for Women – Equal access to land, natural resources, and green jobs.
6️⃣ Secure Digital Rights for Women – Closing the gender gap in technology access and addressing online harassment.

Gender equality is not just a women’s issue—it’s a societal and economic necessity. The fight is far from over, and now more than ever, we must unite to push for lasting change.
