Our Executive Director, Albashir Ibrahim, recently participated in a powerful session at the AidEx – The Global Humanitarian Aid Community and Development2030 event held in Geneva, Switzerland. The event brought together global leaders, experts, and advocates dedicated to tackling today’s most pressing challenges and advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The panel discussion, “Partnering with Local Actors – From Challenges to Impact, How Can We Enable Local Actors to Be a Catalyst for Tackling the UN SDGs?” highlighted the critical role local organizations play in advancing sustainable development and addressing community needs directly. Local actors, with their on-the-ground insights and connections, are often best positioned to identify issues, design contextually appropriate solutions, and engage community members in meaningful ways. However, despite their indispensable role, local organizations frequently face barriers such as limited funding, lack of access to international partnerships, and insufficient representation in decision-making processes.
During the session, panelists shared valuable insights on how to overcome these barriers and create a more supportive environment for local actors. Topics included the importance of sustainable funding models that prioritize long-term partnerships over short-term grants, capacity-building initiatives to enhance local organizations’ skills and resources, and the need for policy frameworks that recognize and amplify local voices. Panelists also underscored that empowering local actors not only drives progress toward the SDGs but also strengthens community resilience, promotes equity, and fosters ownership of development outcomes.
By fostering partnerships that elevate local actors and prioritizing genuine collaboration, the global community can ensure that sustainable development efforts are both impactful and sustainable in the long term.
